Best Locations, What to Wear & How to Prep for Your Senior Session

Just because we live in Iowa does not mean your senior photos need to happen in a cornfield. 😂

(Although… jokes aside… fields can be incredible.)

When planning senior photos with Kaleigh Rose Photography, my goal is always the same:

Let’s break it all down—from the best senior photo locations in the Cedar Rapids area, to what to wear, how to prep, and what parents should know.


Best Senior Photo Locations in Cedar Rapids & Surrounding Areas

Here’s the truth: good lighting matters more than a “pretty background.”

I’ll take soft, glowy light every day of the week over a cool-looking spot with harsh shadows or spotty sunlight. Lighting is what makes your skin look amazing, your eyes pop, and your photos feel professional.

That said, we do have some seriously great locations around here.

My Go-To Senior Photo Locations in Eastern Iowa

These are places I shoot at often and love:

  • Morgan Creek Park (Palo)
  • Wanatee Park (Marion)
  • Lowe Park (Marion)
  • Downtown Marion – 7th Ave Square
  • Downtown Cedar Rapids – 1st Ave, 3rd Ave, murals, brick & concrete textures
  • Mount Vernon Main Street – small-town charm, so underrated
  • Palisades-Kepler State Park – cliffs, trees, river views
  • Lake Macbride State Park
  • Solon Main Street- again, that small town charm vibe
  • Wikiup Hill (Toddville)
  • Kent Park (Tiffin)
  • Ice cream parlors (yes please 🍦)
  • Botanical Gardens in Dubuque
  • University of Iowa campus & Ped Mall (Iowa City)
  • Indoor studio in downtown Cedar Rapids – perfect year-round

And don’t forget: the best locations are often personal.

A family spot you love. Your high school gym or stadium. A stage if you’re into the arts. These always make photos feel more meaningful—and honestly, more fun.

  • Brick vs. concrete
  • Tall grass vs. cornfields
  • Leading lines
  • Depth and movement
  • How light hits your face, not just what’s behind you

How to Prep: Hair, Skin & Nails Tips for Seniors

A little prep goes a long way. Here are 10 easy tips to help you look and feel your best:

  1. Start moisturizing your skin 1–2 weeks before your session
  2. Drink water (boring but magical)
  3. Don’t try new skincare products right before your session
  4. Gently exfoliate a few days before (especially lips!)
  5. Get hair trimmed 1–2 weeks ahead of time
  6. Avoid big hair changes right before photos
  7. Style your hair how you normally wear it—just polished
  8. Keep nails clean and neutral
  9. Moisturize hands and cuticles
  10. Get good sleep the night before (seriously underrated)


5–10 Must-Have Senior Photos Every Session Needs

Every senior session is different, but these are the staples I always aim for:

  1. A classic smiling portrait
  2. A more serious / editorial-style shot
  3. Full-body standing pose
  4. Seated or relaxed pose
  5. Close-up detail shot
  6. Movement (walking, spinning, hair flip, etc.)
  7. A photo showing personality or interests
  8. A favorite outfit look
  9. A candid laugh or in-between moment
  10. A “this feels like me” photo (the goal every time)


What to Wear for Senior Photos (and What Not To)

What Works Best:

  • Neutrals, soft colors, earth tones
  • Layers (jackets, sweaters = instant depth)
  • Clothes that fit well and feel comfortable
  • Outfits that reflect you, not just trends

What to Avoid:

  • Neon colors
  • Large logos or graphics
  • Super busy patterns
  • Wrinkly fabrics
  • Anything you constantly have to adjust

Dressing for the Seasons:

  • Spring: light layers, flowy fabrics
  • Summer: breathable fabrics, simple silhouettes
  • Fall: cozy textures, warm tones
  • Winter: structured coats, knits, boots (we keep it quick!)


+Note: These are suggestions for most looks, of course wear what makes you feel the most confident.
