What to Expect From an Outdoor Family Session (and how to prepare!)
Family photos should feel like your family.
Not overly posed.
Not stiff.
Not stressful.
My goal with every outdoor family session is to create a relaxed, fun experience that captures your family just as you are in this season of life.
The laughter, the little moments, the way your kids reach for your hands, the way you naturally interact together — those are the memories worth preserving.
Here’s a little look at what working together is like and how to prepare for your session.
My Approach to Family Photography
My style is very natural and relaxed. I primarily use natural light and focus on keeping skin tones true and colors true to life.
My editing style is timeless and clean so that when you look back at your photos years from now, they still feel authentic and beautiful.
When it comes to posing, I keep things simple. I’ll guide you into flattering positions and give gentle direction, but I’m not aiming for stiff, perfectly posed images.
Some of the best photos happen in between the “posed” moments — when your kids are giggling, when someone whispers something funny, or when everyone just relaxes for a moment.
I also tend to follow the kids’ lead. If they need to move, explore, or take a break, that’s completely okay.
Sometimes switching gears creates the most genuine moments.
As a parent of two young kids myself, I truly understand how unpredictable children can be. There is absolutely no pressure for everything to go perfectly.
My sessions are designed to be flexible and stress-free so everyone can simply enjoy the experience.
What to Expect During Your Session
Outdoor family sessions are relaxed and easygoing.
We’ll spend time walking around the location, finding beautiful light, and letting your family interact naturally.
I’ll guide you through a mix of simple posed moments and natural interactions so your gallery includes both classic family portraits and candid moments.
You can expect:
• Gentle direction so you never feel awkward
• Lots of movement and interaction
• Breaks when kids need them
• Plenty of patience and flexibility
• A fun, relaxed environment for everyone
The goal isn’t perfection — it’s connection.
How to Prepare for Your Session
A little preparation can make your session even smoother and more enjoyable.
Choose Comfortable, Coordinated Outfits
Soft, neutral colors and earthy tones photograph beautifully outdoors. Try to coordinate rather than match exactly. Flowy fabrics, layers, and textures add movement and visual interest.
Plan Around Happy Kids
If possible, try to schedule the session when your kids are usually in a good mood. Bringing a small snack or a favorite comfort item can also help if they need a quick reset.
Trust the Process
Kids will be kids — and that’s perfectly okay. Some of the most loved images come from spontaneous moments rather than perfect smiles.
Relax and Have Fun
The best thing you can do is simply enjoy your time together. Laugh, hug your kids, swing them around, whisper something silly. Those real moments are what make your photos special.
Creating Memories That Last
Family sessions aren’t just about taking photos — they’re about preserving the little details of your life right now.
The way your kids fit in your arms. The way they laugh. The way your family connects together.
My hope is that your session feels easy, joyful, and something you look forward to year after year.
These are the images you’ll print for your walls, flip through in albums, and share with family and friends.
They become part of your home and part of your story.
I can’t wait to capture these memories for you.
